Our Inspiration “Shri Chami” Sir

Dr. Narayana Sadashiv Hosmane

About Dr. Narayana Sadashiv Hosmane (Chami Sir)

Dr. Narayana Sadashiv Hosmane is an internationally renowned scientist whose journey from humble beginnings in Gokarna, Karnataka has led to groundbreaking achievements in chemistry—especially boron chemistry—and cancer research. His story blends perseverance, innovation, and global recognition across decades of scientific excellence.

Early Life and Education

Born June 30, 1948, and raised in poverty, Dr. Hosmane did his schooling in gokarn shri bhardakali highschool. Dr. Hosmane excelled academically and earned B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at Karnatak University. In 1971, he won a rare Ph.D. studentship at the University of Edinburgh, where he became interested in silicon and boron hydrides—fields that defined his future research.

The Origin of "Chami"

Dr. Hosmane’s childhood nickname, "Chami", originated from Havyaka Brahmin customs. His grandmother, unable to call him by his grandfather’s name “Narayan” due to tradition, called him “Narayanaswamy,” which became "Shami." Neighbors, impressed by his fair skin and round, Krishna-like features, soon called him “Chami,” a name that became his identity before age two.

Inspired by the endearing name ‘Chami,’ we founded the Shrii Chami Vidhyavahini Trust in Gokarna with a vision to give back to the community. The trust is dedicated to uplifting the underprivileged by providing access to quality education, nurturing talent, and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

Scientific Achievements

His career includes postdoctoral work at Queen’s University of Belfast, research positions in Northern Ireland and the USA, and faculty roles at Virginia Tech and Southern Methodist University, before joining Northern Illinois University (NIU) in 1998 as Distinguished Research Professor. He pioneered boron-based cancer therapies—particularly Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT)—and led clinical research, drug development, and material science innovation.

Mentorship and Research Output

Dr. Hosmane’s academic impact is immense:

  • Mentored 40-45 graduate/postgraduate students, 75 postdoctoral researchers and visiting professors, and over 260 undergraduate research students.
  • Supervised 15 high school students from the Illinois Math & Science Academy (IMSA).
  • Authored 405+ peer-reviewed publications and 9 books in advanced chemistry, cancer therapies, and organometallic science.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Hosmane has received:

  • Two Alexander von Humboldt Research Awards (Germany), a rare distinction for senior US scientists.
  • Gauss Professorship, Göttingen Academy of Sciences (Germany), where he lectured on cancer therapy.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Distinguished Chair of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, India.
  • NIU's Board of Trustees and Presidential Research Professorships.
  • Foreign Membership in the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, joining Nobel laureates and elite scientists.
  • Founder of "Boron in the Americas" (BUSA), recognized by 25+ countries for his work.

Mentorship and Global Influence

Dr. Hosmane is revered for his nurturing mentorship, dynamic teaching style, and steadfast advocacy for fundamental scientific education. His mentees have achieved international recognition, multiplying his influence globally.

Current Vision and Achievements

At NIU, Dr. Hosmane continues research on cancer therapies and green chemistry, such as environmentally friendly methods for producing graphene. He remains deeply connected to his Indian heritage and committed to mentoring future scientists.

Dr. Narayana Hosmane’s life exemplifies unwavering commitment to science, humanity, and education—from a small town in India to the frontiers of global research—anchored by the humble nickname “Chami” and enriched by his worldwide impact in chemistry and cancer treatment.

Our Guiding Light: Shri Vasant Kodlekere

Shri Vasant Anant Kodlekere

About Shri Vasant Anant Kodlekere

Shri Vasant Anant Kodlekere is a well known social worker in Gokarna today. After his retirement he has been spending most of his time dedicated to upliftment of poor students. Shri Vasant Kodlekere himself got graduated after going through hardship. In fact he had to sacrifice his two years by taking break after school education at Bhadrakali High School Gokarn, before entering College, so that his elder brothers could complete graduation with limited available funds in the family. After Graduation, he decided to stay back in Gokarn and worked in Bank for more than three decades again helping and guiding poor.

After Retirement he has been Associated with various social organisations. Dr. Narayan Hosmane, well known Global Scientist is a close friend and classmate of Shri Vasant Kodlekere. Dr. Hosmane who himself had gone through similar hardships during his Education expressed his desire of Donation by transferring some fund available in India, to Shri Vasant Kodlekere, Mr. Kodlekere suggested that Creating a Trust is a better Idea which will not only collect funds but also operate in a better way.

Thus Shrii Chami Vidyavahini Trust was formed. Most of the Trustees were also recommended by Shri Kodlekere. Looking at the way this Trust has been working for last couple of years by collecting funds and carrying out Activities in Educational and Social fields in record time and the dedication with which all the Trustees are working, the decision and vision of Shri Vasant Kodlekere has been proved right
